Tomorrow, the only thing we can be certain of…
is that it will be different than today.
In 1995, we all got our first PCs and it changed the way we interacted with information.
In 2000, our teams went online and the ability to share information over oceans, in real time, fueled a massive shift in the way we did everything.
In 2005, we got Blackberrys and suddenly we could send email and be in meetings at the same time (so we did twice as much of both!).
In 2010 our organizations started trading servers in a closet for servers in the Cloud.
In 2015, we had so much data in the cloud that we needed Data Science and Machine Learning to pull it back out and make sense of it all.
In 2020, teams broke free from the shackles of offices and went remote with the power of Zoom and Slack. This was accelerated due to COVID-19, but the demand for distributed teams was building long before 2020 as teams struggled to find talent in the zip code where they happened to have an office.
Change is the new normal.
The ground is moving constantly under our feet. The things we learned 15 years ago aren’t as useful as they once were. Our leaders aren’t as helpful because their experience was gained on an outdated battlefield. The problem-solving techniques that got us to today, don’t work anymore. And when we finally become masters of what we do, the world doesn’t need that thing anymore.
Today, we live in the Age of Continuous Change. In this new age, we need a new model for success. The old one might not be dead yet, but it is becoming less and less useful every day.
This is a monumental obstacle standing in the way of many teams’ success and I’ve been studying it intently for 30 years. Understanding this challenge and the tactics for overcoming it has helped me to reinvent myself and the teams that I have led and coached. Every day, with these discoveries, I help individuals and organizations to reinvent their model for survival, and growth, and innovation, and leadership.
It takes three things for teams to thrive in the Age of Continuous Change.
Organizations must apply a new model for innovation… one that will keep them at the leading edge of their industry.
Teams must employ a new model for collaboration… one that doesn’t rely on the patterns and tools of the past.
Leaders must discover a new model for leadership… one that that’s no longer focused on rank, and tenure, and the number of grey hairs.
These are massive challenges. But all it takes is a series of small, but highly-targeted, adjustments to the way teams tackle reinvention, collaboration, and leadership.
With these adjustments, every team, can leap from laggard to innovator.
